A jewel on the South coast of Crete. A tiny tourist village that can be reached only by ferry boat or a three hour hike on a narrow rocky trail along the coast. The surrounding landscape is spectacular.

WILD GOATS ARE EVERYWHERE

Four of us ... hiking along a rugged trail east of Loutro. We round a curve and 25 feet in front of us is a wild goat silhouetted against a sparkling blue sea. A photographic opportunity of a lifetime! … I snapped the shot immediately.
CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER
It’s delightful ... warm, fresh and clean. As you put on your water goggles and snorkel and start swimming under water, a school of tiny fish will show up and start swimming beside you.

KAYAKING
The best time to kayak is in the morning ... the sea is calm. Winds usually pick up in the afternoon. Skimming over crystal clear water alongside steep, rugged cliffs. It’s a wonderful way to begin the day. So many memories of my experiences in Loutro. Following is a poem written during one of my kayaking trips.
MY COVE
Kayaking along side of a steep, white marble cliff. Skimming over the crystal clear, azure blue water
I glide into a small cove. Onto a shore of smooth, glittering white stones
A narrow cleft in the rock rises forty feet above me. Sparkling walls of jagged, stained marble.
Awestruck . . I step out of my kayak Looking . . Listening . . Touching.
I spread out my towel, sit down and begin to write. Hearing a soft click . . . . I look up . .
A feather has spiraled down from the sky and landed upright beside me.
